Back to Normal
Message from the Director
Dear friends, I am grateful to say we at ILSC have all faired remarkably well during the Brisbane floods. A couple of teachers and staff were affected by the power outages but no-one experienced any major flooding to their houses. Likewise our homestay families have all come out alright, including a family located in Bulimba near the river! A few students had to relocate for a couple of days. All students have now returned home. The college was completely unaffected. We are so thankful.
We are very proud of our many students who have volunteered to help those less fortunate in the community. This week our activities program will coordinate students who want to help with the clean up around the city.
In Brisbane there is such a dynamic spirit of positivity and collective recognition of interconnectedness. People are deeply moved as total strangers line up to clean and help residences and local shops cope with the aftermath so that in a matter of days and in some cases hours streets are cleaned and cleared.
Bus and train services are up and running with very few disruptions. Most businesses, like ILSC, are open and back to normal.
The next few weeks will see a greater return to usual for the large part of Brisbane and we look forward to welcoming new students.
Please rest assured that the airport and transport into the CBD are operational and in good shape. All our host families are safe and have good routes into the city. We encourage new students to use the homestay program to make their initial step to Brisbane so that they and their families can be confident in them being placed in unaffected areas with good transport and facilities. Supermarkets are operational as usual with shelves well-stocked.
State departments are asking the government to relook at the skilled migration as there is a big need for people to work, rebuild, clean and service the cities.
Please contact us if you have any questions. These photos were taken on our first day open and Brisbane city up and running again.
Yours sincerely,
Babette Furstner
